EvCC Instructor Lew Winje By Bobby Meade
At the end of the spring quarter, EvCC’s most senior full-time instructor will be leaving after 39 years of teaching various math courses.
Lewis “Lew” Winje will not be stepping down entirely, however, as he will become part-time faculty teaching two math classes in the fall quarter, Math 055 and Math 153.
Winje said he wanted to “work [his] way into retirement.” Since teaching has been a part of his life for so long, it would not be easy to just walk away.
Winje pursued a career in teaching after a friend in the army pointed out that it was a great job choice.
He received his two-year degree from EvCC, a bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University, and a master’s degree from Bowling Green University in Ohio.
After graduating from WWU, he taught high school math in South Bend, WA for two years before being awarded a National Science Foundation scholarship. After receiving his master’s, Winje taught at Olympic College in Bremerton for two years. In 1967, Winje began teaching at EvCC and has been faculty since.
In the 39 years that he has taught here, Winje said that he could count on one hand the number of times he didn’t want to come into work.
Winje said the students who are placed into the right class, show up, and do the work will be successful.
“Teaching is the most important job on the campus,” said Winje, “I tried to stay out of the politics.”
